AMAHLE — “THE BEAUTIFUL ONES”
Xhosa-inspired · Cone Table Lamp
A lamp inspired by beauty.
Amahle brings together handcrafted wood and a shade inspired by the visual language of Xhosa cultural dress and textile expression.
The Rounded Baluster wooden base gives the lamp a strong, sculptural presence, with its rounded form creating visual weight and stability. Its Black finish gives the handcrafted wood a deep, contemporary character that creates a striking contrast against the bright geometric shade.
Above it, the black-and-white cone shade features a distinctive Spiked Squares pattern, combining geometric forms with strong lines and contrasting shapes.
The pattern and contrasting colours draw from the visual language through which traditional clothing communicates cultural identity. In Xhosa traditional attire, patterns, designs and beadwork form important elements of cultural expression, with Umbhaco being an important material and form of traditional dress.
AfroLamps translates this inspiration into a contemporary lighting piece. The strong black-and-white geometry gives Amahle a distinctive graphic presence, while the deep black wooden base creates a bold, cohesive foundation.
When illuminated, the shade softens the strong geometric pattern and produces a warm, welcoming glow, bringing together culture, craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Cultural Inspiration
Amahle draws inspiration from the visual language of Xhosa traditional clothing, where colour, pattern and design form part of cultural expression.
The Xhosa tradition of Umbhaco incorporates distinctive clothing and beadwork, with traditional garments valued as expressions of cultural heritage and respect for ancestors. Patterns and designs in Xhosa attire also form part of this cultural expression.
These elements provide the cultural foundation for the Amahle shade.
Pattern & Colour
Pattern: Spiked Squares
Colour: Black & White
The Spiked Squares pattern gives Amahle its distinctive geometric identity. Its black-and-white palette creates strong contrast, allowing the geometric forms to stand out clearly.
Rather than reproducing a specific traditional garment, AfroLamps takes inspiration from the geometric pattern language, contrasting colour and decorative character associated with Xhosa cultural dress and translates these influences into a contemporary lampshade.
