MASHUDU — “HAPPINESS”
Venda-inspired · Cone Table Lamp
A lamp inspired by happiness.
Mashudu brings together handcrafted wood and a shade inspired by the colourful textile traditions of Venda dress.
The Urn Pedestal wooden base gives the lamp a graceful, grounded presence. Its rounded, pedestal-inspired form creates visual weight and stability, while the Burnt Mahogany finish brings a rich, warm character to the handcrafted wood.
Above it, the cone shade introduces a more expressive silhouette, creating a balanced relationship between the rounded wooden base and the tapered shade. Its green colour and yellow-striped pattern draw from the colourful and striped textile language associated with Venda traditional dress.
Venda traditional women’s clothing includes garments such as the Nwenda and Wenda, made from colourful and multi-coloured striped cloth. These textile traditions provide an important part of the visual inspiration behind the AfroLamps Venda collection.
For Mashudu, AfroLamps translates this inspiration into a contemporary shade through a green and yellow striped design, bringing the rhythm and colour of Venda-inspired textiles into a modern lighting piece.
When illuminated, the shade produces a warm, welcoming glow, allowing the colour and striped pattern to become part of the atmosphere of the space.

Mashudu is part of the AfroLamps Cultural Collection, where each shade carries its own name, meaning, cultural inspiration, colour and pattern.
Cultural Inspiration
The Mashudu shade draws inspiration from Venda traditional dress and Minwenda/Wenda textile traditions.
Venda clothing has evolved over time, from earlier garments made from materials such as animal skins to the use of colourful modern fabrics. The Nwenda is described as a colourful striped cloth, while Wenda refers to multi-coloured striped cloth used in Venda women’s traditional clothing.
These textile traditions form the cultural foundation for the Mashudu shade.
Colour & Pattern Inspiration
Colour: Green
Pattern: Yellow Stripes
The green and yellow striped design is AfroLamps’ contemporary interpretation of the colourful, striped character of Venda textile traditions.
Rather than reproducing a traditional garment, Mashudu takes this visual language and translates it into a modern lampshade.

THE AFROLAMPS BASE
The Mashudu shade is paired with a handcrafted AfroLamps Urn Pedestal wooden base in a rich Burnt Mahoganyfinish.
The rounded pedestal form gives the lamp a substantial yet elegant presence, complementing the tapered shape of the cone shade above it. The Burnt Mahogany finish adds warmth and depth while allowing the natural character of the handcrafted wood to remain part of the design.
