At AfroLamps, we create contemporary lighting pieces that combine natural wood, skilled craftsmanship and culturally inspired shade designs.Because our products incorporate natural materials, individually produced components and handcrafted finishing processes, minor variations may occur from one product to another. These characteristics are part of the nature of our products and are explained below.
1. Natural Materials, Craftsmanship & Construction
AfroLamps wooden bases are produced using a combination of precision machine turning and skilled hand-finishing.
Our bases may be constructed by carefully joining multiple pieces of the same type of natural wood before the assembled material is precision-turned, sanded and finished to create the final form.
As a result, individual bases may vary slightly in:
- wood grain;
- colour and tone;
- natural markings;
- texture;
- joint or grain appearance; and
- minor finishing characteristics.
These variations are normal characteristics of natural wood and handcrafted production and do not necessarily indicate a defect.
Where a product has a specific manufacturing defect or fails to meet applicable quality requirements, the applicable warranty and consumer protection provisions will apply.
2. Cultural Patterns & Interpretation
Our lampshades draw inspiration from South African cultural traditions, visual languages, textiles, colours and patterns, including influences associated with Afrikaners, Basotho, Cape Malay, English, Indian South Africans, Khoisan, Ndebele, Pedi, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu traditions, where applicable to individual collections.
AfroLamps translates these cultural influences into contemporary lighting designs.
Accordingly:
- patterns may be artistically adapted for use as lampshades;
- colours may be interpreted for contemporary interior environments;
- pattern placement may vary between individual shades;
- cultural expressions may differ between regions and communities; and
- a shade should not necessarily be interpreted as a literal reproduction of traditional clothing, artwork or cultural artefacts.
AfroLamps seeks to approach its cultural inspirations respectfully. However, our products are contemporary design interpretations and are not intended to constitute ethnographic, historical or anthropological representations.
Where a particular cultural meaning or interpretation is presented on our website, we aim to distinguish between documented cultural information and AfroLamps’ contemporary design interpretation.
3. Electrical Compatibility & Safety
Our current AfroLamps lamps use E27 lamp holders, unless otherwise stated on the individual product page.
The lamps are designed for use with the electrical specifications stated for the particular product.
Please:
- use a compatible E27 bulb;
- observe the maximum wattage specified for the particular lamp;
- follow the bulb manufacturer’s instructions;
- keep the lamp away from water and excessive heat;
- do not use a damaged cable, plug, lamp holder or other electrical component; and
- do not modify the electrical components without appropriate professional assistance.
For international customers, electrical voltage, frequency, plug types and applicable standards may differ from those in South Africa. Customers are responsible for ensuring that the lamp is suitable for the intended country of use and should obtain advice from a suitably qualified electrician where necessary.
4. Wooden Base & Bonded Components
The wooden construction of an AfroLamp requires appropriate care.
Where multiple pieces of wood have been joined to create a base, the bonded sections form part of the construction of the finished product.
Natural wood can respond to environmental conditions such as:
- excessive moisture;
- prolonged heat;
- direct sunlight;
- significant changes in temperature; and
- extreme humidity or dryness.
These conditions may contribute to movement, cracking, warping, changes in finish or stress on bonded sections over time.
For this reason, customers should follow the AfroLamps Product Care.
Customers should not attempt to separate, reglue, drill, modify or otherwise alter the wooden base themselves.
5. Indoor Use
Unless expressly stated otherwise, AfroLamps products are designed for indoor use.
Exposure to rain, outdoor weather, excessive moisture, prolonged direct sunlight, extreme humidity or unsuitable environmental conditions may affect the appearance, materials and structural integrity of the product.
Such environmental exposure may also fall outside the scope of any applicable manufacturer’s warranty where the damage results from inappropriate use or conditions.
This does not limit any consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
6. Product Images & Natural Variation
We make every effort to photograph our products accurately.
However:
- screen settings may affect the appearance of colours;
- lighting conditions can change how colours appear in photographs;
- natural wood grain and colour can vary;
- handmade shades may have minor differences in pattern placement or finishing; and
- lifestyle photographs may contain furniture, décor or accessories that are not included with the product.
The individual product description should be used for the specific product specifications, dimensions, materials and components included with the purchase.
7. Product Specifications
Product dimensions and specifications are provided as accurately as reasonably possible.
Minor variations may occur as a result of:
- natural material characteristics;
- manufacturing tolerances;
- finishing processes; and
- handmade or individually assembled components.
Where a product specification is important for installation or placement, customers should contact AfroLamps before purchasing if they require clarification.
8. Warranty & Consumer Rights
AfroLamps provides warranties where stated on the applicable product page or Warranty Policy.
Our warranties apply in addition to any rights that consumers may have under applicable South African consumer protection legislation.
In particular, the South African Consumer Protection Act provides an implied warranty of quality for qualifying consumer goods. Section 56 provides a framework under which qualifying defective, unsafe or unsuitable goods may be returned within six months of delivery, subject to the requirements of the Act.
Nothing in this Product Disclaimer is intended to exclude or limit a consumer right that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
9. Liability & Improper Use
AfroLamps is not responsible for damage resulting from use of a product contrary to its instructions, specifications or intended purpose, including damage resulting from:
- unauthorised modification;
- misuse or abuse;
- inappropriate electrical modification;
- exposure to unsuitable environmental conditions;
- accidental damage; or
- unauthorised repair or alteration.
Nothing in this section limits liability or consumer rights where such limitation is prohibited by applicable law.
10. Design Updates
AfroLamps may make reasonable changes to product designs, materials, finishes or specifications where necessary to improve quality, availability, manufacturing processes or product performance.
Where a change materially affects a product already purchased, the customer’s applicable contractual and consumer rights will continue to apply.
