ZANELE — “WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN”
Ndebele-inspired · Cone Table Lamp
A lamp inspired by gratitude and abundance.
Zanele brings together handcrafted wood and a shade inspired by the bold visual language of Ndebele cultural expression.
The Urn Pedestal wooden base gives the lamp a strong yet elegant presence. Its rounded central form and turned detailing create a sense of balance and craftsmanship, while the rich Burnt Mahogany finish brings warmth and depth to the natural character of the wood.
Above it, the cone shade introduces a vibrant geometric expression. Its green foundation is brought to life with bold diamond and geometric forms in contrasting colours, creating a striking relationship between colour, pattern and shape.
Ndebele traditional attire is recognised for its vibrant colours, geometric patterns, intricate beadwork and decorated garments. Clothing and adornment form an important part of Ndebele cultural expression, with traditional skirts, necklaces, blankets, headpieces and other accessories displaying a distinctive visual identity.
Zanele draws from this tradition of colour, geometry and craftsmanship, translating the visual energy of Ndebele dress and decorative arts into a contemporary lampshade.
Rather than reproducing a traditional garment, AfroLamps interprets these visual elements through a modern lighting design.
When illuminated, the shade creates a warm, welcoming glow, allowing its vivid colours and geometric pattern to become part of the atmosphere of the space.

Cultural Inspiration
The Zanele shade draws inspiration from the traditional attire and visual arts of the Ndebele people.
Ndebele traditional attire is known for its vibrant colours, bold geometric patterns, beadwork and decorated garments. Women’s traditional dress includes colourful skirts, beaded jewellery and headpieces, while blankets and other garments also contribute to the distinctive visual identity of Ndebele culture.
This combination of colour, geometry and craftsmanship forms the cultural foundation for the Zanele shade.
Colour & Pattern Inspiration
Primary colour: Green
Pattern: Diamonds
The Zanele shade uses green as its dominant colour, combined with contrasting geometric elements to create a lively and expressive composition.
The diamond pattern gives the shade its distinctive visual identity. Its geometric forms are a contemporary interpretation of the strong geometric visual language associated with Ndebele decorative expression.
Rather than reproducing a specific traditional garment, Zanele translates the colour, geometry and visual energy of Ndebele cultural expression into a contemporary lampshade.
